Grade 4
Welcome to Fourth Grade!
Areas of Study
LANGUAGE ARTS
Language Arts instruction is built around our
Readers Workshop Model program. Students apply their learning with independent practice with level-readers and student practice skills books. Also, during the day, there is a block of time where teachers differentiate instruction and meet with small groups.
In addition, the narrative and expository writing genres are taught throughout the year. Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessments are administered three times during the year.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies is mainly integrated with the
Readers Workshop Model units; however, we include more in depth studies of immigration, the U.S. states and map skills over the course of the year. In the spring, our study of immigration culminates with a special day during which the students participate in a simulation of the processing at Ellis Island.
SCIENCE
Science is also integrated with Language Arts. Fourth grade supplements those lessons with science units about Rocks and Minerals (including Erosion), Sound and Hearing, and Color and Light (including vision). These units combine reading brief texts about each subject and experiencing scientific principals through hands-on, "laboratory" experiments.
